Transfer Option from Phoenix to Puerto Penasco-

• Specializes specifically in Phoenix ↔ Rocky Point routes.

Driving from Phoenix to Rocky Point is one of the easiest international road trips you can take—just about 4 hours total. The route is simple, and the border crossing at Lukeville/Sonoyta is typically smooth and traveler-friendly. Exact location address will be provided upon registration for anyone who wants to drive their personal car.   Note: If driving from Phoenix to Puerto Penasco, MX please allow approximately 5 hours for travel time in case there is a line and wait at the border crossing.

1. Head to the Lukeville Crossing

• Drive south from Phoenix toward Lukeville, AZ 
• You’ll cross into Sonoyta, Mexico, then continue straight to Puerto Peñasco (about 1 hour from the border) 

2. At the Border

• You’ll drive through a checkpoint where Mexican officials may: 
  • Ask a few simple questions (Where are you going? How long are you staying?) 
  • Occasionally inspect your vehicle 
• Most travelers pass through quickly, especially during non-peak times 

3. Documents Required (and to re-enter the US)

• Valid passport (required for all travelers) 
• Driver’s license 
• Vehicle registration (recommended to have on hand)

Your U.S. auto insurance is NOT valid in Mexico—you must purchase Mexican liability insurance before crossing.

Why it matters:

• It’s legally required 
• If you’re in an accident without it, you could be held liable on the spot

• Liability coverage (required) 
• Optional: collision, theft, medical payments for added peace of mind

• Online before your trip (fast and easy) OR there are places along the way in Ajo.

Cost:
Typically $15–$30 per day depending on your vehicle and coverage

• Follow speed limits (they change frequently and they will ticket you).
• Watch for topes (speed bumps—they can come up quickly).
• Avoid driving at night. 
• Stay on the main highway to Puerto Peñasco (very straightforward route).
